Why is there no preview until I type something?

What makes a block valid?

A Source title / claim and an http or https URL. Author, date, and quote are optional. An invalid URL prints Enter a valid http:// or https:// URL.

Why did a long quote show a warning?

Is the JSON tab APA or MLA?

No. It is a schema.org Quotation node. There is no bibliography style. Use a citation plugin if you need an academic format.

What if I only have a title and a URL?

That is enough for valid output. A blockquote appears only when Direct quote or statistic has text. Quote context is preview-only and is omitted from the copied markup.

About Source Attribution Block

Source Attribution Block builds paste-ready HTML, Markdown, and JSON-LD that credits an external page. You enter the details from that page. The tool does not fetch the source and does not guess an author.

Fields are Source title / claim, Source URL, Author / expert, Author credential, Publisher / organization, Publication date, Direct quote or statistic, and Quote context. Add another source appends a second card with Up, Down, and Remove. Output stays hidden until any field has text.

Preview shows How it looks on the page. Tabs are HTML, JSON, and Markdown. valid requires a title and an http(s) URL. A quote over 60 words warns that long quotes are less likely to be extracted whole. This is not APA or MLA.

When to use it

Use it when a statistic, expert line, or study is doing work in the article, before you publish that claim as a bare sentence. Use it again when a competitor is cited from a named source and your page still says research shows with no link. Skip it for a nav link you are only mentioning.

How to use Source Attribution Block

1Fill Source title / claim and Source URL. Copy both from the page you are citing. Title plus a valid http(s) URL is what makes the output valid.
2Add author, publisher, date, and the quote. Direct quote or statistic should be the exact sentence. Quote context is optional. Leave the quote blank for a source line only.
3Optional: Add another source. Each card has its own fields. Up and Down change order. Remove drops a card.
4Copy HTML, JSON, or Markdown. HTML is for the article. Markdown is for docs or llms.txt. JSON is a Quotation node. Paste the block beside the claim.

Why this matters for AI search

Pages that cite sources are cited more often. A crawler that can see who said the number, on which URL, and on which date has a block it can lift with the claim still attached. A title plus Wikipedia URL alone emitted a Quotation node and a Markdown link, with no blockquote, because no quote was entered. Adding a 65-word quote fired Long quotes are less likely to be extracted whole.

That pairing is the mechanism. Engines prefer a claim they can point back to. A footer list of links is not next to the sentence it supports. Put the generated figure beside the claim in the body. The tool will not prove ChatGPT will reuse your citation. It only makes the credit machine-readable.

What this tool cannot do

It cannot look up a DOI, format APA or MLA, fetch the source page, or prove an engine will cite you. Quote context appears in the preview only and is omitted from HTML, Markdown, and JSON. Generation is local. No hourly cap. Closing the page clears the cards. Do not paste paywalled quotes you are not allowed to republish.

Common mistakes

Pasting a paraphrase into Direct quote or statistic. The hint says copy the sentence that carries the claim.

Leaving Source URL as not-a-url. The field prints Enter a valid http:// or https:// URL. and valid stays false.

Dropping the block in the footer. The preview is a figure for the article body, next to the claim.

A quote with no author and no publisher. The warning is A quote with no attribution is weaker than no quote.
