5W1H Matrix is a six-slot worksheet that turns Who, What, Where, When, Why, and How into short extractable answers. You type in the labeled fields. The tool formats what you wrote. It does not fetch a page and does not invent a missing slot.

Each card shows WHO through HOW, the prompt (Who is this for?, What is it?, Where does it apply?, When does it matter?, Why does it matter?, How does it work?), and a hint. A character count sits on the box. Under 10 characters prints Too short to be an answer. Over 300 prints Long: an answer engine will extract the first sentence.

When to use it

Use it before you outline a page that has to convince, and again when a draft has a method but no reason. Use it when a competitor is cited on why a thing matters and your article only describes what it is. Skip changelogs and reference tables. Those readers already have context.

How to use 5W1H Matrix

1Fill the six labeled slots. WHO through HOW. Write for a stranger. Leave a slot blank if the page has nothing to say there.
2Watch the count on each box. Under 10 characters shows Too short to be an answer. Over 300 shows the long-extract warning. A blank has no nudge.
3Copy Markdown or JSON. Only answered slots appear. Markdown uses ## Who, ## What, and the rest. JSON keys are who, what, where, when, why, how.
4Switch to JSON-LD after three answers. The third tab appears then. Paste it as a FAQPage block if you want those prompts marked up.

Why this matters for AI search

A page that never writes why gives an engine nothing to quote on that axis. The JSON-LD names the questions literally: Why does it matter? If that slot is blank, the Why heading is omitted from Markdown and the key is omitted from JSON. Two filled slots (Who and What) produced headings for those two only. Adding Why unlocked the JSON-LD tab and a third Question node.

That is not a style preference. Citation products answer why-questions with a sentence that already exists. If your HTML is silent there, they lift a competitor who wrote one, or they skip the claim. Filling What and How while leaving Why empty is the usual miss on a product page.

What this tool cannot do

It cannot read your live page, query ChatGPT, or fill a slot you left empty. Nothing is fetched. Closing the page clears the boxes. FAQ rich results in Google Search are limited to government and health sites even when the JSON-LD tab is on. The markup still marks the six answers for other readers.

Common mistakes

Writing businesses in WHO. The hint asks for a role, such as Small agency owners, not a market noun.

Pasting a 400-character Why. The long nudge is real: the first sentence is what gets lifted, so the rest is wasted on extraction.

Treating a blank as a fail. Empty slots stay out of the export on purpose. A blank Why is the finding.

Expecting JSON-LD at two slots. The tab is withheld until three answers exist, because FAQPage needs more than a pair of leftovers.
